After you eat the bacon, cut into the egg and the rest of the yolk flows out to enrich the wild mushrooms below. The plums and figs, a mix of port-soaked plums and figs with Serrano ham and Garoxta cheese, gets a manic zig-zag of balsamic reduction all over it. But fancy garnishes come off as silly when they’re trotted out just for the sake of it—especially at a place with a TV at the bar playing ESPN. But I refuse to pay $14 for a guy behind the bar to pour a little bit of bourbon into a glass, top it off with “chai-infused” sweet vermouth, and stick in a tiny piece of rock candy as the final flourish. Rich fruit, good body and crisp acidity make this Alsatian pinot gris an excellent food wine, and the panel favorite for the opulent mac ‘n’ cheese. If a child develops a bit of a runny nose but seems otherwise healthy, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to make a visit to the doctor, much less rush to the emergency room. Even absent additional symptoms, if the runny nose requires the consumption of box after box of tissues over several weeks, it’s a good idea to at least check in with the doc. This came to mind upon receiving a letter from a child psychiatrist scolding me for not recommending a psychiatric evaluation for a 10-year-old boy who used a school writing assignment — a poem — to express sadness at the state of the world. With all due respect, I think it might completely unnerve this child for his mom to take him to talk to a professional because he used a poetry assignment to purge himself of certain feelings.
